A chest of drawers is usually made of wood, like oak, pine, maple, spruce, mahogany, ash, or cherry and has from three to six large drawers with a smaller top drawer that might be split or solid.
The first chest of drawers appeared in England when the country was under the reign of Charles II. The first chest of drawers of this period was constructed of glazed woodwork and was basically used as a bookcase with one or two doors rather than a storage unit used in the bedroom. However, the Dutch later copied the design, but the doors of this piece of furniture were changed into drawers; thus, the Dutch variant of this piece of furniture resembled the contemporary chests of drawers.
Mostly people use chest of drawers for storing small items of clothing, for example, socks, pantyhose, lingerie, belts, scarves and handkerchiefs. Some people also use fixtures chest of drawers to store various personal articles. Some chest of drawers feature shallow top drawers for jewelry, hair combs and other accessories.
Chests of drawers come in various styles and designs. A chest of drawers can be a tall chest with legged bases known as a highboy. Also there are chests of drawers that are combined wardrobe; this type of chest of drawers is called a chifforobe. The typical chest of drawers is wider than its height and features a rectangular shape as well as short stands or legs for support. The standard chest of drawers has 6-7 pull out drawers. What is more, some chest of drawers has a mirror mounted on the flat top for the owner's convenience.
